On the upside: I think I've managed to kick the writer's block with my novel rewrite, and all it took was deleting like two and a half pages of a scene that wasn't working and rewriting it.

On the downside, I'm pretty sure I've just discovered that I'm going to have to kill a character I really don't want to kill to make the rest of the story work. :(

...is it permitted to write fanfic of your own original fiction where someone who died For Plot Reasons survives?

What happens if you look into alternatives for that character that are neither Life As Before and Death? Maybe they can go jump sharks!

You know what, about 90% of the time when I suddenly get stuck on a story, it's because the last thing I wrote was wrong. Congrats on getting unstuck!

Oh dear to your character, though. D:

I remember reading something once about how Jane Austen and everyone before computers had to write every draft by starting again, which makes perfect sense when I think about it, but I'd never really considered that what I do most of the time is just edit the same one draft over and over. But clearing the page and starting again sometimes makes so much new and better stuff... but it's really hard to 'throw away' (even if it's saved in another file) all that stuff. Feels like the time was wasted? I think?

Absolutely is! You'll have the very first fic in its AO3 tag.

That's great that it's changing! But I hear you, long form is hard as. There's so much to juggle and keep in mind and it's a lot of time taken up in planning and writing, it's easy to burn out. I've abandoned a few long stories. But finishing one is such an amazing feeling.

Yay for kicking the block. That's always such a great feeling! You should totally write your own canon divergent story of your story.
